tsuru

display hanger

Tsuru is a custom designed retail display hanger for a kimono. Inspired by Japanese imagery and colours, its mechanical wings spread open to beautifully display the fabric of the kimono. When closed or bare, its own elegance is a statement of quiet sophistication.

The origami crane, known as Orizuru, is an instantly recognisable icon of the Japanese art of paper folding.

The red-crowned crane of Japan is the second rarest crane in the world. Its magestic wings and streamlined poise inspire the shape and movement of the hanger.

Origami folds and the traditional Japanese fan are also echoed in the design of the final piece.

My initial exploration of the idea tested the boundaries of what a hangar is. Playing with the fan concept, I used paper and thin wood strips to build the structure. The central sliding circle was established at the heart of the piece, providing it with movement.

The introduction of fabric for the wings transforms the hanger into a more luxurious item, while colour is used to accentuate key elements of the structure.

Black, gold and red combine to accentuate the structure and motion of the hanger.

The beak remains the hook from which the piece hangs.
